Cosmetic dentistry is for quick improvement in visual appearance

An orthodontist is concerned with the straightening of teeth and correcting jaw structure. The imbalance between the two can lead to problems like overbite, under bite, crookedness etc. Teeth in such conditions cannot be cleaned properly and this leads to further problems. Some of them are tooth decay, bad breath, periodontist, gum diseases and more. Another side effect of misaligned jaw or teeth is reflected on the visual appearance or in other words the 'smile'. Most of the patients visiting an orthodontist are also concerned with the way they smile which gets affected due to the crowding or crookedness of teeth.

An orthodontist while not only straightens teeth with the help of dental appliances like braces, retainers and aligners but also helps in avoiding complex oral healthcare problems. These devices are either bonded [braces] or worn [aligners] over a period of time ranging from one to two years depending on the severity of the condition. However, the condition also dictates whether an orthodontist will prescribe wearing braces or aligners. After undergoing a series of tests, treatment plan is made and orthodontics is recommended. However, people have options if they don't like metal braces. They can go for clear braces or invisible braces which are less noticeable than the traditional ones.

While orthodontics focuses on the oral health, cosmetic dentistry is for esthetics. It improves the visual appearance of teeth damaged because of some accident or naturally. The types of treatment that Cosmetic Dentistry currently involves include whitening, composite bonding, dental veneers, dental implants, fillings and more. Whitening involves bleaching teeth stained from smoking, food or chewing tobacco etc. while bonding involves applying material into the cavity. Veneers are adhesively bonded to the tooth to repair chipped or cracked parts; dental implants are artificial replacement for missing tooth and dental fillings are for correcting minor tooth damages.

Get a perfect smile with clear aligners

Ever wondered if you could be like those people with immaculate smiles and perfect set of teeth? Chances are your answer would be a firm yes. And yes, it is true that we all long for physical perfection and are obsessed with beauty. But there is more to smile than one can think of. A beautiful smile is a result of not just being naturally well endowed with a perfect set of teeth and jaw structure but also how successfully one manages to maintain them. In simple words, having a healthy set of teeth is the pre-requirement of a pleasing smile. However, most of us aren't that lucky i.e. Not everyone is born with perfectly aligned teeth. The condition is known as malocclusions i.e. when teeth are crowded and out of place. Not just they negatively affect your looks but also become a breeding ground for dental problems when not taken care of properly. Regularly brushing teeth is not sufficient, it requires the attention of a dentist. Invariably, when visiting a dentist for such a problem the foremost thing he/she will recommend is wearing braces. These are wire and metal brackets that are worn on teeth for a considerable period of time. These appliances by applying pressure on the misaligned teeth push them back to their ideal positions.

The solution to this condition is however not a charming prospect for everyone. The way these metal braces make one look while smiling or laughing is something people are resistant to. Possibly, one may also stop socializing for the time being or even smiling/laughing openly. However, a solution lies in clear braces and clear aligners.

Clear braces are nothing but a modification of the traditional metal ones. They are made of material like ceramics that are less noticeable than the traditional ones. On the other hand, clear aligners are transparent plastic trays worn over the teeth and work the same way as braces do-by applying continuous pressure.

What do expect from invisible and clear braces?

You must have friends or relatives who have used braces. These orthodontic appliances are used for straightening teeth. They work by applying pressure on the misaligned teeth, pulling or pressing them to their ideal or intended positions. At first these may feel somewhat foreign or even irritating in the mouth but gradually one gets used to its sensations. One may also experience pain but it fades away within two-three days. However, what you must have noticed is the way the braces look i.e. their clunky look. If you are also suffering from the problem of misalignment, the thought of wearing them must have crossed your mind as well but maybe the way they are visible while talking or smiling might have proved to be a big deterrence.

However, if the only problem that you would want to avoid while wearing the braces is their visibility then the possible solutions are invisible braces and clear braces. Invisible braces are attached behind and not in the front portion of the teeth thus one can't notice them easily. Clear braces are made of material like ceramics that are 'tooth colored'. This causes them to blend with the color of your teeth and thus camouflaged easily. However, one has to be extra attentive if using them avoiding causing any damage to the ceramic material.

These are only cosmetic alternatives to the traditional metal braces and work on the same pattern. The accompanying discomfort and temporary changes in lifestyles will be a part of them as well. The only difference is that you can easily talk and smile in public without fearing if anyone can notice whether you are using clear braces or not.

Another thing to be taken care of is the regular visits to a dentist for re-adjustments depending on the new positions the teeth have acquired after being fitted with the braces. This has to be repeated every four to six weeks.

If suffering from only mild malocclusions and you do not want to experience any changes in daily life or avoid visiting a dentist every time you need to clean your teeth, then a better option is to go for clear aligners. These plastic appliances work similarly like metal braces but are virtually invisible and also are removable without the need of an expert's supervision.

An orthodontist can do wonders to your smile

It is quite usual for people to wonder in amazement over the smile of others. Most of the people have been endowed with a perfect and beautiful smile that pleases everyone. For those not so lucky, they resort to cosmetic dentistry. Even famous celebrity or movie stars with their sparkling smiles may have employed the services of an orthodontist or undergone Cosmetic Dentistry to achieve the hypnotic smile. The technique involves using external means to improve jaw structure or align teeth properly using dental appliances like aligners and braces to design a perfect smile. The advances in the field of orthodontics have seen innovations that deliver high quality results in a short span of time. The various treatments may range from minor techniques like teeth whitening to elaborate surgeries like jaw reconstruction and more. The most common treatments are teeth whitening, porcelain veneers, crown, dental bonding, filling and more. However, precautions must be taken before embarking upon any such treatment as other dental problems might aggravate due to reactions or ignorance.

Apart from the esthetics, visiting an orthodontist may also result in greater longevity of teeth and improved clean ability that may in turn avoid many dental problems. It can correct 'bite', bad breath, and other gum diseases and studies have also shown that bad oral health can also act as a precursor to heart ailments. For crowded teeth, one will have to wear braces or can also opt for aligners. These have to be worn over teeth for over a certain period of time, requiring changing them or refitting them regularly till the teeth have been pushed back to their ideal positions. A warm smile oozes self- confidence and radiates positive energy all around. This is especially important for people dealing with clients. People suffering from oral diseases are known to suffer from lack of confidence as they are always conscious of their teeth/smile/breath. By visiting an orthodontist, one can get rid of these problems based on the treatments suggested. The treatments are available for both children and adults.
